From A–Z: Our Favorite Independent Bookstores on Cape Cod & the Islands — Part One
This is the first of a two-part series celebrating some of our favorite independent bookstores on Cape Cod, with more wonderful shops to come in Part Two.
Bookstores come in all manner of shapes and sizes. Part of the fun of traveling the world is exploring these portals that reflect the traditions and cultures of the areas they serve, being aware to leave room in my luggage to hold new literary purchases.
From Barnstable to Oak Bluffs, the Cape & Islands are home to more than 20 small, independent bookstores—each with its own personality, history, and loyal following. These shops are more than retail stops; they’re gathering places, community anchors, and reminders that some of the best travel discoveries happen when you slow down and wander inside.
Rather than ranking them, this two-part series explores these shops from A to Z, celebrating the variety, personality, and community spirit that make each one worth seeking out.
This is Part One (A–L) of our alphabetical journey, with more wonderful bookstores to come in Part Two.
A quick personal note: this spring, my own book—Cape Cod & the Islands Family Fun Guide—will be released by Globe Pequot. Independent bookstores like the ones featured here have long supported my work, from my first self-published book to today, and I’m especially grateful to see this new chapter unfold alongside the local shops that help keep Cape Cod’s literary community thriving.
Now, let’s get lost in a good bookstore.
Annie’s Books & Gifts
Housed in a charming white cottage just off the road in Orleans, Annie’s Books & Gifts feels like the kind of bookstore you hope to stumble upon on a Cape Cod afternoon. Sunlight pours through its windows, shelves are thoughtfully arranged, and the overall feeling is welcoming rather than overwhelming. Annie’s has long been a reliable stop for a well-curated mix of books, gifts, and local-interest titles—serving both year-round residents and returning visitors who make it part of their Cape routine. The shop is closed for the season, but it’s well worth putting on your list for the next time the “Open” sign is back in the window.

Belonging Books, Hyannis
Belonging Books on Hyannis Main Street is a community-oriented bookstore dedicated to representing people of color and other underrepresented voices and stories. This shop is a gathering place that serves as an essential space for discovering diverse perspectives and narratives, making it a powerful and vital stop on any Cape Cod literary tour.

Below the Brine Bookshop, Harwich Port 📚
One of the newer faces on the bookstore trail, Below the Brine Bookshop brings a welcome burst of fresh energy to sleepy Harwich Port. Small in size but big in heart, the shop shines through its thoughtfully curated selection of books by local authors and titles rooted in Cape Cod history. The space itself is warm and inviting, featuring hand-cut shelving salvaged from the owner’s antique home—a detail that feels perfectly in keeping with the Cape. Whether you’re wandering through town in the quieter months or during the height of summer, it’s a natural and memorable stop on any indie bookstore voyage.

Bread and Roses, Hyannis
Located just down Main Street, Bread and Roses is a unique spot that combines the love of books with a welcoming gathering space. While it features a café, its shelves are filled with a wide array of books, making it a perfect place to browse, find a new title, and soak up the local atmosphere. During our visit, we savored a cappuccino and chocolate eclair- made the Brazilian way.

The Brewster Book Store, Brewster 📚

The Brewster Book Store can be found at 2659 Main Street. Their advertisement proclaims it is “filled to the brim with books, games, puzzles, toys, greeting cards, and gifts.” I’ll second that! Look for their Cape Cod book collection- it’s outstanding! These folks really supported us when we self-published our book, My Mosaic Alphabet Book. This shop is a must-stop for families and gift-givers. Another independent gem on the trail.

Bunch of Grapes Bookstore, Vineyard Haven 📚
No trip to Martha’s Vineyard feels complete without a stop at Bunch of Grapes Bookstore. A longtime anchor of the island’s literary life, the shop is known for its thoughtful programming and strong connection to writers, readers, and ideas rooted in the Vineyard. You’ll find a carefully chosen selection of books of local interest, always with a distinctly Martha’s Vineyard point of view. Spread across multiple levels, it has the feel of a place where conversations and curiosity naturally gather.
Owner Molly Coogan brings a deep publishing background to the store, having previously worked as an assistant editor at the Clark Art Institute in the Berkshires and earlier in publishing in Boston and New York. Her recommendations—and those of her staff—are well worth listening to. When Debbie and I visited last spring, Vineyard Haven was quiet and unhurried. We had time to browse at our own pace, enjoy folksy conversations, and soak in the space—very different from the height of summer, when Main Street hums with July energy and the shop buzzes with readers coming and going.

East End Books — Provincetown 📚
You can’t explore Cape Cod’s bookstore scene without reaching the very tip. Located on colorful Commercial Street, East End Books is small but thoughtfully curated, emphasizing quality over quantity.
Known for its strong selection of LGBTQ+ literature, poetry, philosophy, and local art, the shop reflects the creative, independent spirit of Provincetown. Finding it feels like discovering a literary oasis at the end of the road.

Edgartown Books, Edgartown 📚
Housed in a beautiful historic building on Main Street, Edgartown Books defines island charm. Step inside and you immediately know you’re in a one-of-a-kind bookstore—the hand-painted staircase alone makes that clear.
On our spring trip to the island, Debbie and I stopped in and chatted with the manager, Matthew, in between him helping other customers. He was friendly, welcoming, and genuinely interested in the idea of hosting a book signing when my new book comes out in May 2026.
We spent some time sitting on the porch afterward, perfect for people-watching (was that Carly Simon strolling by?) and appreciated the café tucked down the side alley, an ideal spot for a refreshing break between wanderings. Edgartown Books is the kind of place that turns a simple bookstore visit into a full Vineyard moment.

Eight Cousins Books, Falmouth
Eight Cousins Books is located in the charming, walkable downtown of Falmouth. Started in 1989, it’s known for being one of the best independent children’s bookshops in the nation, but it offers far more than just kids’ titles. They also have a wonderful selection of adult fiction and non-fiction, often focusing on literary fiction, social issues, and local interest. Their staff is exceptionally knowledgeable and passionate, making it a perfect spot for finding that next great read or a unique gift. (Love their unique gift wrapping!)

Herridge Books — Wellfleet
Tucked into the heart of Wellfleet, Herridge Books is a small bookstore with a deeply thoughtful presence. Known for its carefully curated shelves and a substantial selection of used books, the shop reflects the literary, reflective spirit of the Outer Cape. The owner is widely regarded as genuinely dedicated to books and always willing to linger in conversation—whether you’re asking for a recommendation or simply talking about what you’re reading. Herridge Books is closed for the season, but for readers who value depth, discovery, and real connection around books, it’s well worth seeking out when it reopens.

If you’re looking for something truly out of the ordinary, Isaiah Thomas Bookstore earns the bonus spot.
Housed in a bright pink Victorian house, this legendary used and rare bookstore feels like a treasure hunt from the moment you step inside. The shop specializes in art, architecture, photography, first editions, and especially Cape Cod books—and it’s also home to hundreds of vintage and collectible comic books, making it a surprise hit with collectors and curious browsers alike. Market Street Bookshop, Mashpee 📚
I know I’ve mentioned our fondness for this special spot before, but a second look at Market Street is well-deserved. The owner, Cynthia, is a true champion of the local writing community. She was instrumental when we were getting My Mosaic Alphabet Book off the ground, and it’s that kind of personal support that makes independent bookstores the heartbeat of our towns. I love to sit on a bench by the impressive fountain just outside and flip through my latest purchase—it always feels like I’m lingering in a small village somewhere in Europe.
